Test Engineering is the practical application of the sciences to prove the quality of the device under test. It involves knowing, designing, and applying test methods and equipment to that task. Further, it requires the determination of specifications of device attributes (outputs) while in a particular state (inputs).

Test Engineering uses design documents, FMEA results, and product life cycle specifics to determine the test specifications. In addition it needs to take into account the order, or sequence, in which the tests are performed.

The output of the Test Engineering process is the Test Specification and the Process Specification.
